Basic concepts in family therapy

The process of deidentification can lead to the development of what is called the Cain Complex. In the Bible, Cain and Abel were two brothers with diametrically opposed personalities. Just as Cain derived a sense of superiority from disparaging Abel’s traits, so do any two siblings find it easier to feel superior if each feels qualitatively different from the other.
For example, the “popular” sibling feels superior in terms of telephone calls and dates, viewing the other one’s lifestyle as downright dull. The “intelligent” sibling can feel superior to the other in grades and relationships with adults, viewing the other one as a bit of nitwit. Thus, the differences allow each other to shine in an indipendent spotlight. Such deidentification may affect the relationship positevely. If it is carried to extremes, though, each one may reject the other as “too weird”; their feelings for each other may be diminished.

Il processo di deidentificazione può portare allo sviluppo di quello che è chiamato Complesso di Caino. Nella Bibbia, Caino e Abele erano due fratelli con personalità diametralmente opposte. Così come Caino traeva un senso di superiorità dal disprezzo delle caratteristiche di Abele, così ciascuno in una coppia di fratelli trova più semplice sentirsi superiore se si reputa qualitativamente diverso dall’altro.
Per esempio, il figlio “popolare” si sente superiore in termini di telefonate ricevute e appuntamenti, considerando lo stile di vita dell’altro assolutamente sciocco. Il fratello “intelligente” può sentirsi superiore per i voti e le relazioni con gli adulti, ritenendo l’altro ancora un po’ infantile. Così le differenze permettono a ciascuno di brillare di luce propria. Questa deidentificazione può quindi influenzare positivamente la relazione. Se portata agli estremi, però, ciascuno può rifiutare l’altro come “troppo strano”; i loro sentimenti verso l’un l’altro potrebbero diminuire.
